The Sinner - The Ratings Triumph
An engrossing and emotional murder mystery thriller that’s bound to have you anxious, excited and produce a few tears. The Sinner, based on Petra Hammesfahr’s book of the same name, published in 1999, has become a ratings triumph and it is clear to see why.
The story begins with a seemingly average, but somewhat discontented young woman, Cora Tannetti (Biel). During a normal day out at the beach with her husband Mason (played by Christopher Abbott) and her son, it soon takes a dark, dramatic turn after Cora kills a man. With no obvious motive behind the killing, Detective Ambrose (Pullman) who oversees her case, begins to question whether there is more to Cora, her past and her relationship with the victim than first meets the eye.
Biel, 35 years old, is perhaps best-known for her roles in 7th Heaven, Blade: Trinity and Total Recall. However, this new role shows her as you have never seen before, as a woman desperate to remember and understand what has suddenly turned her into a cold-blooded killer.
Throughout this eight-part drama, the bond between Cora and Ambrose rises and feels true, but does this relationship begin to affect how he approaches this case?
The numerous flashbacks of Cora’s past alongside Ambrose’ current marital issues begin to take its toll, far more than either of them expected. And, with the adage of Detective Farmer (Joanna Adler) arriving and trying to take over the case, the pressure as the trial nears is incontrovertible. Will this stop the truth coming out or will they, along with the audience find the answers they are looking for to solve the missing puzzle piece?
Arguably the best thriller piece to be released in 2017, The Sinner will take you on a journey reminding you that not everything is as it seems. There are many ways the past can stay buried, but with this unique story, perhaps the best thing for everyone is when it catches up with you.
